Eraker & Schellekens

A piece for one dancer and three stroboscopes, connected through contact microphones and sensors. Imagined, developed and produced together with dancer / choreographer Janne Eraker.

About

If tap dance still makes you think about musicals with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, then Tap Noir will change that at breakneck speed. In a dark world, inspired by film noir and Japanese horror, a tap dancer plays an enigmatic installation of strobes and sensory soundscapes. A flood of optical illusions and alienating rhythms takes you on a surreal trip.

Tap Noir is the latest project by tap dancer / choreographer Janne Eraker (NO) and light and sound designer Jorg Schellekens (NL). They place the rhythm and vocabulary of tap in a context of exclusively stroboscopic light and electronic sound. The result is an evocative piece in a one of a kind shape.

Press

…it feels as if someone is physically forcing my eyelids shut, and I lose control of my own body. Rarely has a dry factual warning about the use of stroboscopic light proved to be as relevant as here, because the performance Tap Noir is like a forty-five minute fever dream. I’m a little nauseous, and I love it.” Eline Bjerkan, Scenekunst.no, 22 November 2023
