“To Moscow, to Moscow, to Moscow!”
After their father’s death, the three sisters Olga, Masha and Irina live in the provinces, isolated and forgotten by the world. All three dream of a different life and repeatedly make attempts to break out of the sadness – through career prospects or marriage. But they fail not only because of the circumstances, but above all because of themselves. None of the sisters manage to pursue their dreams, let alone realize them.
Maren E. Bjørseth, who was born in Norway in 1984, is directing for the first time in Germany at the Staatstheater Mainz. She studied directing at the Theaterschool Amsterdam and in 2012 first showed her own style with her graduation piece “Nora or A Doll’s House”: a playful and form-conscious reinterpretation of Ibsen’s classic. She enjoys taking on material that tells about people in an absurd and confusing world. She is looking for an abstract form and a way of playing that exposes the absurdity of this world and is only a few centimeters away from realism. Bjørseth also works as a director in her home country of Norway and enjoys “making optimal use of the advantages of both theater cultures.”
