Casting The Pass

Het Zuidelijk Toneel

Sound design for a newly developed play by Bram Jansen about the complexities of #MeToo and the power structures that enable abuse.

About

Where there is power, abuse is never far away. The global #MeToo movement also exposed abuse of power in the film, theater and sports world in the Netherlands. In Casting “The Pass” director Bram Jansen investigates the relationship between perpetrator and victim. In Casting ‘The Pass’ a young actor auditions for his dream opportunity: the role of a top footballer in the theater play ‘The Pass’. He is received in the casting director’s kitchen where, once inside, he is slowly sucked into a manipulative world of power and submission. Where boundaries are stretched and pushed.

The play and film of the same name The Pass by John Donnelly shows how an apparently romantic as well as erotic interaction between two young football professionals has a major influence on the life and career of one of them. It is the starting point for a new performance, for which Jansen – close to the fire and part of the system that has made abuse possible until now – draws on his own experiences and those of those around him.

Casting “The Pass” is not a reckoning with the accused of #Metoo, nor a condoning of transgressive behavior. After the shock of the revelations, the media hype and the sniggering, it is time for empowerment. It is an attempt to make the complex theme tangible and insightful and a plea for revising power structures and morals.
